The San Jose Walk n' Roll program aims to promote walking and biking to school among students, teaching safe skills and organizing events to boost confidence in active transportation. According to the program, "Walking and biking to school helps kids get exercise every day." This initiative not only benefits the physical health of children but also addresses environmental concerns. The program highlights that "38% of Co2 emissions in California come from transportation, primarily from cars and trucks."

Moreover, walking or biking to school offers valuable learning experiences for children. They learn important life lessons by navigating their neighborhood and interacting with classmates, fostering confidence and independence. In addition, families can save money by reducing vehicle trips to school through active transportation.

As the community gears up for the spring season, the Walk n' Roll program reminds everyone to stay safe, especially with the upcoming daylight saving time change. The program encourages individuals to wear bright or reflective clothing when walking or biking, cross streets at designated areas, and wear helmets for protection. It also emphasizes the importance of avoiding distractions and using hand signals while cycling.

In an effort to promote road safety, the program urges residents to slow down while driving, emphasizing that speeding is a leading cause of fatalities and serious injuries in San Jose. By adhering to speed limits, drivers can significantly reduce the likelihood of accidents and protect themselves and others on the road.

With the school year progressing quickly, the Walk n' Roll program continues to offer support for schools and students. Schools are encouraged to engage with their WnR Coordinator or email walknroll@sanjoseca.gov to schedule upcoming events such as safety assemblies, bike rodeos, helmet distributions, and more.

In addition to promoting safe transportation practices, the San Jose community can look forward to upcoming events in March and April, including the 2024 Silicon Valley Reads and the Great American Litter Pick Up. These events provide opportunities for residents to engage with their community and contribute to a cleaner, safer environment.

As San Jose residents embrace the spring season, the Walk n' Roll program stands as a beacon of encouragement for active and safe transportation practices among students and families alike.
