Colby Garland has been named the Old Trapper Mountain West Men’s Basketball Player of the Week, according to an announcement from the conference on Monday. He is the first player from San José State University to receive this honor since Omari Moore in February 2023.

In two games last week, Garland scored a total of 51 points and contributed 14 assists, five rebounds, and four steals. He shot 55.9 percent from the field, 44.4 percent from three-point range, and made 90 percent of his free throws over 80 minutes played. During San José State’s win against Nevada, Garland had 29 points, nine assists, and three steals while making four out of five attempts from beyond the arc. In the game against Boise State, he added another 22 points and five assists with a shooting percentage of nearly 53 percent.

Garland currently averages 19.4 points per game for the season. This places him second among all players in the Mountain West Conference and ranks him 46th nationally. He has reached or surpassed the 20-point mark in six consecutive games—something no Spartan has done since Adrian Oliver in 2011—and has scored at least ten points in all but two games this season.

He also stands out for his efficiency and playmaking abilities: Garland is sixth in field goal percentage within the conference, fourth in both assists per game (averaging 4.5) and assist-to-turnover ratio. His scoring average is also notable as it is just below Richard Washington’s team-leading average of 19.5 points during the 2020-21 season.

Garland recently broke a school record by making 37 consecutive free throws; Carroll Williams previously held that record with a streak of 31 set in 1955. In addition, Garland surpassed the milestone of scoring more than one thousand career points during San José State’s last game at Boise State.

Before joining San José State University as a junior point guard from Magnolia, Arkansas, Garland averaged over twelve points per game last season at Longwood and was recognized on Drake University’s Missouri Valley Conference All-Bench Team as a freshman.

San José State will play its next game against Air Force on Tuesday evening at Clune Arena; fans can watch via Mountain West Network.

“Colby Garland has been named the Old Trapper Mountain West Men’s Basketball Player of the Week,” stated the conference release.
