Colby Garland was named Third Team All-Mountain West, the conference announced on March 10. This is the second year in a row that a San José State University (SJSU) Spartan has received this honor and marks the third time under Head Coach Tim Miles that a player has been selected to an all-conference team.
Garland’s recognition comes after a standout season where he averaged 20.3 points per game, making him the Mountain West’s second leading scorer. He also contributed 4.6 assists and 3.1 rebounds per game, with shooting percentages of .497 from the field, .386 from three-point range, and .840 from the free-throw line. Garland became the first Spartan since Olivier Saint-Jean in the 1996-97 season to score at least 20 points in ten consecutive games.
Currently ranked as the 27th-highest scorer nationally, Garland joins Ricky Berry, Adrian Oliver, Richard Washington, and Saint-Jean as one of only five Spartans to finish a season among the top 50 scorers in the country. His total of 547 points this season is seventh most in SJSU history.
The Spartans will enter the Mountain West Tournament as the No. 11 seed and are set to play No. 6 seed Boise State on Wednesday, March 11 at Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas. The game will be available on Mountain West Network and KTRB 860 AM.
Garland was also named Mountain West Player of the Week on February 23 after leading SJSU to a split record that included a significant win over Nevada. During that week, he averaged 25.5 points, seven assists, and shot nearly 56 percent from the field.
