FOIA Request to San Jose State University Regarding Chinese National Students on June 3, 2025.

As part of our commitment to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs, we at the San Jose Standard have submitted a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request to San Jose State University. This request seeks information under the California Public Records Act § 6250 et seq., specifically concerning the presence and activities of Chinese National students at the university.

The request outlines several specific inquiries:

1. We are seeking documents or lists that identify all current students who are Chinese Nationals and their respective departments of study. If student names are protected, we have requested a total count of such students, broken down by department.

2. We have asked for documents detailing scholarships received by these students, including the amount and source of each scholarship.

3. Additionally, we seek information about any scholarships awarded through grantors affiliated with the Chinese Scholarship Council, if not already covered in our previous request.

4. Finally, we have requested any policies or procedures that describe how the university monitors students, including Chinese Nationals, to protect its Intellectual Property and other confidential information.

This request is made on behalf of The Coalition Opposing Governmental Secrecy, a 501(c)(3) Non-Profit Missouri Corporation dedicated to investigating state and federal governmental agencies. As members of the media involved in gathering and reporting news to the public, access to public records is essential for us to fulfill our professional responsibilities. We have also requested a fee waiver given our role as media professionals disseminating information for public benefit.
