San José State men’s golfer Avinash Iyer led a group of three Spartan individuals in the opening round of the 2026 NCAA Corvallis Regional at Trysting Tree Golf Club on May 18. Iyer shot a 2-under-par 69, finishing the day tied for 15th place after making five birdies.
The performance is significant as the low individual not on an advancing team from the Corvallis regional will move on to compete in the NCAA Championship Finals. This opportunity keeps postseason hopes alive for individuals whose teams are not advancing.
Alongside Iyer, Keshav “KC” Mungali finished tied for 33rd place with an even-par 71 that included four birdies. Ivan Barahona ended his round tied for 55th after shooting a 1-over-par 72 and making two birdies.
All three Spartans had solid starts to their regional tournament campaigns, demonstrating consistency and competitiveness against a strong field.
The trio will return to Trysting Tree Golf Club on Tuesday to play in the second round of the tournament, aiming to improve their standings and keep hopes alive for advancement.
