San José State University’s women’s tennis team lost 5-2 to Cal Poly on Saturday at the Spartan Tennis Complex. Cristina Mateos Losada led the Spartans by winning her singles match in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4.
Cal Poly secured an early advantage by sweeping all doubles matches and then quickly won singles matches on courts four, two, and three to clinch the overall victory. Despite falling behind, San José State managed to earn two points in singles play.
Camila Celis contributed a hard-fought win for the Spartans on court five. After losing the first set, she rallied to win in a tiebreaker with scores of 2-6, 7-6 (7-4), 10-4. This result improved Celis’ dual match record to 6-1.
Other results included Duru Durgun dropping her singles match 6-2, 6-7(4-7), 4-10; Soledad Fayos Capilla losing on court two with scores of 6-3, 6-2; Emma Fantousis coming up short in her match at 6-2, 7-5; and Tara Mihaljevic losing on court four by a score of 6-0, 6-3.
In doubles play, Durgun and Fantousis were defeated on court one (6-4), Fayos Capilla and Celis lost their match (6-1), while Mihaljevic and Mateos Losada also fell short (6-4).
The Spartans will next compete against Santa Clara University at home on Thursday, March 5 at noon.
