Noriega leads Spartans but team drops two games at Capital Classic

Ahmiya Noriega led the San José State softball team with five hits during the second day of the Capital Classic at Shea Stadium in Sacramento. The Spartans lost both games on Saturday, falling 8-4 to Sacred Heart and 6-1 to Sacramento State.

In the first game against Sacred Heart, San José State trailed 7-0 before scoring three runs in the fourth inning and another in the fifth. Taylor Chillingworth drove in three runs, while Reína Zermeno added an RBI with a sacrifice fly. Kaylani Lim contributed a double. Delaney Faus provided relief pitching, throwing two scoreless innings and allowing only one hit.

Against Sacramento State, San José State scored its only run in the third inning after Noriega delivered a hit to bring home a runner. Chillingworth and Carly Cummings recorded the team’s other hits. Norah Coulsell pitched 4.2 innings with two strikeouts, while Faus again came out of the bullpen for 1.1 scoreless innings.

Faus finished the day with a total of 3.1 scoreless innings across both games, while Chillingworth tallied three RBIs.

The Spartans are scheduled to conclude their participation in the Capital Classic on Sunday when they face UC Davis at noon.
