San José State University’s baseball team won against Cal by a score of 10-7 on April 15, led by home runs from Jake McCoy and Rocco Caballero at Stu Gordon Stadium in Berkeley.
The game saw the Spartans take an early lead in the third inning after capitalizing on two walks and a Cal error. JC Osorio-Agard hit a two-run double, followed by an RBI groundout from Rohne Klein to make it 3–0. Cal responded with a two-run homer in the fourth, but San José State answered back in the fifth as McCoy hit a solo home run and Caballero added an RBI double.
Cal narrowed the gap to one run after scoring twice on sacrifice flies in the fifth. However, McCoy’s RBI double in the sixth helped extend San José State’s lead to three runs again. In the seventh inning, Caballero hit his second home run of the season for a four-run advantage. A defensive play by Neil Jansen and Dylan Jackson ended Cal’s rally attempt that same inning.
The Spartans added two more runs in the ninth thanks to another Cal error, while Cal managed one final solo homer before falling short. Caden Duke earned his third win of the season as a reliever, while EJ McGrew secured the save with three strikeouts over two innings pitched.
McCoy recorded his team-leading ninth home run this year—matching last season’s total—with six coming over his last ten games. Peyton Rowles went three-for-six at bat for his fourth three-hit game this year and extended his hitting streak to thirteen games.
Looking ahead, San José State will play Fresno State next in a non-conference series starting Friday night.
