The San José State baseball team lost to Saint Mary’s 15-5 in a seven-inning game on Friday at Louis Guisto Field in Moraga, California. This was the second contest of a four-game series between the two teams.
Earlier in the day, the Spartans finished a game that had been suspended due to darkness with the score tied at 4-4 in the 13th inning. Saint Mary’s scored in the bottom of that inning to win 5-4. Jesse Gutierrez was charged with the loss for San José State.
In Friday’s regularly scheduled game, San José State took an early lead when Alex Fernandes scored on an RBI groundout by Brent Cota in the first inning. However, Saint Mary’s responded with four runs in their half of the first and added another run in the second inning.
San José State narrowed the gap to 5-3 in the third when Rocco Caballero hit a two-out double, driving in two runs. Caballero finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs.
Saint Mary’s widened their lead with four runs in the fourth and six more runs in the fifth inning. Starting pitcher Kyle Calzadiaz allowed eight runs—seven earned—in 3.2 innings and took the loss for San José State.
Brent Cota contributed a double and an RBI for San José State. Trevor Wilson recorded his first career RBI during the seventh inning, while Cade Cushing pitched a scoreless sixth inning with one strikeout out of relief. Alex Fernandes extended his streak of reaching base to nine consecutive games.
The Spartans will continue their series against Saint Mary’s at Excite Ballpark on Saturday at 1:05 p.m.
