San José State lost to San Diego State, 4-1, in the final game of a three-game series on May 10. The matchup took place at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
The loss marks the end of the series for the Spartans, who now hold a record of 21-27 overall and 8-13 in Mountain West play. The Aztecs improved their record to 32-20 overall and 15-6 in conference games.
San José State scored first when Alex Fernandes was hit by a pitch and Peyton Rowles reached on a fielder’s choice before Jake McCoy delivered an RBI single for an early lead. However, San Diego State quickly answered with two runs in the bottom of the first inning through a bases-loaded single and sacrifice fly. Despite doubles from Brent Cota and a triple from Fernandes in subsequent innings, both runners were left stranded.
The Aztecs extended their advantage with an RBI single in the third inning and another run off an RBI double in the seventh. Spartan starting pitcher Dylan Smith took his fourth loss of the season after allowing three runs over four innings. Relievers EJ McGrew pitched two scoreless frames while Kyle Calzadiaz struck out four batters across two innings but allowed one run.
Fernandes notched his fifth triple this season, moving him into sixth place all-time at San José State with eleven career triples while also extending his hitting streak to eleven games. Caballero finished perfect at the plate with three hits and a walk, while Cota hit his ninth triple this year. Calzadiaz now has fifty-five strikeouts this season.
Looking ahead, San José State will host Fresno State for another three-game series beginning Thursday, May 14 at Excite Ballpark.
