The San José State baseball team secured a 3-0 victory over New Mexico on March 15, taking the series 2-1 at Excite Ballpark. Pitchers Dylan Smith and Tyler Albanese combined to hold New Mexico scoreless, allowing only four hits and striking out six batters.
This shutout marks the Spartans’ fourth of the season and their second in this series. The team has now recorded its most shutouts in a season since 2015 and achieved two shutouts in a single series for the first time since 2011.
Smith started the game with six scoreless innings, giving up just two hits and striking out three to earn the win. Albanese finished with three scoreless innings and three strikeouts, collecting his first save of the year. Offensively, San José State scored in three different innings, including RBI doubles from Alan Ramirez and Brent Cota. The Spartans drew eight walks and played error-free defense while holding New Mexico hitless with runners in scoring position.
Alex Fernandes contributed by going 1-for-2 at the plate with three walks, extending his hitting streak to nine games and his on-base streak to all eighteen games this season. Jake McCoy also went 1-for-2 with two walks.
Looking ahead, San José State will host a double-header against UCONN and San Diego State on Friday, March 20 at Excite Ballpark. The game against San Diego State is a non-conference matchup, and both games will be available for viewing on Mountain West Network.
