The San José State baseball team lost 8-7 to New Mexico on March 14 in the second game of a three-game series at Excite Ballpark.
The matchup was marked by a late rally from the Spartans, who scored four runs in the bottom of the ninth inning but ultimately fell short. The loss brings San José State’s record to 6-12 overall and 1-1 in Mountain West play, while New Mexico improves to 13-6 and also holds a 1-1 conference record.
New Mexico took an early lead, scoring runs in the first, second, and fifth innings. San José State responded with an RBI triple from Dylan Jackson in the fifth and two more runs in the sixth thanks to RBIs from Alan Ramirez and Jake McCoy. However, New Mexico extended its lead with four runs—three unearned—in the ninth inning.
In their final at-bat, singles from Rocco Caballero and JC Osorio-Agard helped load the bases for San José State. Rohne Klein delivered a pinch-hit RBI single, Neil Jansen was hit by a pitch to bring home another run, and Alex Fernandes added an RBI groundout. A misplayed ball off Brent Cota’s bat allowed another run to score, narrowing the gap to one run before New Mexico ended the game with a double play.
San José State used four pitchers during the contest. Luka Pintar took his first start of the season and received the loss after allowing two earned runs over 4.1 innings. Kyle Calzadiaz pitched 3.2 innings in relief with five strikeouts. Offensively, Osorio-Agard went 2-for-4; McCoy went 1-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI; Rowles reached base twice via walks; Fernandes extended his hitting streak to nine games and has reached base in all eighteen games this season.
The Spartans will conclude their series against New Mexico tomorrow at Excite Ballpark.
