San José State baseball opened its three-game series against Pitt with a 20-1 defeat on Friday at Excite Ballpark. Alex Fernandes led the Spartans offensively, going 2-for-3 with two doubles and extending his on-base streak to 13 games, which covers every game so far this season.

Pitt took control early in the contest, scoring eight runs in both the first and third innings. The Panthers totaled 20 runs on 17 hits over seven innings.

San José State managed just three hits for the afternoon. Jake McCoy drove in the team’s only run with an RBI single in the fourth inning after Fernandes reached base with a leadoff double.

Kyle Calzadiaz (1-2) was charged with the loss for San José State. The bullpen contributed 6.1 innings of relief, including three innings from Spencer Kratt, who also recorded three of the team’s nine total strikeouts.

Cade Cushing, Landon Marchetti and Kyler Bacosa also pitched during the game.

The Spartans will face Pitt again in game two of the series on Saturday at Excite Ballpark.
