The San José State men’s basketball team is set to play Grand Canyon University on Saturday at the Global Credit Union Arena. The matchup, scheduled for 5 p.m. PT, will be available for viewing on the Mountain West Network and broadcast on KTRB 860 AM.
This game marks the first time San José State (5-10, 0-4 MW) will face Grand Canyon (9-5, 2-1 MW). So far this season, the Spartans have used seven different starting lineups. Only Colby Garland and Jermaine Washington have started every game.
Garland has been a key player for San José State, averaging 18.9 points per game. This ranks him second in the Mountain West Conference and 56th nationally. He recently broke the school record for most consecutive free throws made with 35, surpassing Carroll Williams’ previous mark of 31 set in 1955. Garland has scored at least 20 points in five straight games between December 5 and December 30, joining Adrian Oliver and Josh Uduje as the only Spartans to achieve this since 2011. In total, he has eight games with at least 20 points this season, tying for most in the conference.
In addition to his scoring achievements, Garland leads the conference in made field goals and is fourth in field goal percentage. His total of 101 made field goals ranks him among the top players nationwide.
Yaphet Moundi is another significant contributor for San José State. He is averaging 12.5 points and 7.6 rebounds per game, ranking fifth in rebounding within the conference. Moundi has recorded five double-doubles this season—third most in the Mountain West—and had three consecutive double-doubles against Michigan State, Bethesda, and Southern.
Adrian Myers reached a career-high of 20 points along with eight rebounds off the bench during a win over San Diego on December 5. Myers also leads San José State in blocks this season.
Jermaine Washington is leading the team from beyond the arc with an average of just over two three-pointers per game and plays one of the highest minute totals in the conference.
Other notable performances include Pasha Goodarzi shooting .433 from three-point range; Melvin Bell Jr., who averaged more than thirteen points over his last four games; Marcus Overstreet leading all Spartans with an average of more than fifteen rebounds per forty minutes; and Ben Roseborough averaging ten points per game as a freshman—the highest by a Spartan freshman since Keith Fisher III during the 2017-18 season.
