Sarah Deplitch led the San José State softball team with a two-run double during a 4-3 extra-inning loss to Fresno State on Apr. 2.

The game was close throughout, with both teams exchanging leads and tying runs before going into extra innings. The outcome affects the Spartans’ record, bringing them to 11 wins and 22 losses overall and three wins and seven losses in Mountain West play.

Fresno State took an early lead by scoring two runs in the first inning. The Spartans responded in the second inning when Shay McDowell drew a walk after a nine-pitch at-bat, followed by Haley Reeve’s single. Deplitch then hit a double that brought home both runners, tying the score at 2-2.

Reina Zermeno added momentum for San José State with a triple in the next inning, and Ahmiya Noriega’s sacrifice fly put the Spartans ahead briefly at 3-2. However, Fresno State tied it up again in the seventh inning on a sacrifice fly, pushing the game into extra innings where they scored once more in the ninth to secure their win.

Delaney Faus started as pitcher for San José State. After allowing two runs early on, she kept Fresno scoreless over five innings while striking out three batters. Eight different Spartans recorded hits during the game; McDowell had two hits while Leata Sherlin, Carly Cummings, Sophia Burdick, Reeve, Noriega, Zermeno and Deplitch each contributed one hit apiece.

The Spartans will continue their series against Fresno State on Friday evening at Spartan Softball Complex. The upcoming game will be available for viewing on Mountain West Network.
