The San José State softball team lost to UNLV by a score of 3-2 on March 14 at the Spartan Softball field. Carly Cummings led the Spartans with a double and drove in the team’s first run, but it was not enough to secure a win.

The game began with Cummings hitting a double into left-center field on a full count, allowing Reina Zermeno to score from second base and giving San José State an early lead. UNLV responded in the third inning with two consecutive runs after both teams went scoreless in the second.

Sophia Burdick tied the game for the Spartans in the fourth inning by lining a single into left field, bringing Shay McDowell home from second base. However, UNLV scored what would become the winning run in the top of the sixth inning.

Norah Coulsell started as pitcher for San José State, throwing for 5.1 innings and recording two strikeouts. Delaney Faus entered during the sixth inning after UNLV’s go-ahead run and pitched 1.2 scoreless innings with one strikeout.

Six different Spartans each recorded a hit during the game: Ahmiya Noriega, Taylor Chillingworth, Zermeno, Burdick, and Cummings. The loss marks San José State’s first home defeat against UNLV since April 28, 2024.

The Spartans will conclude their series against UNLV on Sunday at noon. The final game will be broadcast on NBC Bay Area.
