San José State University’s softball team achieved a 10-2 victory over the University of California during the second day of the Stanford Invitational on Saturday. The game, played at Stanford Softball Stadium, ended in a run-rule decision after five innings.
Sarah Deplitch led San José State with her first home run of the season, adding a double and two RBIs. She was supported by teammates Shay McDowell, Reina Zermeno, and Ahmiya Noriega, who each contributed key hits with two outs. “SJSU’s hitters proved lethal with two outs, accounting for nine of their 10 RBIs in the contest,” according to the team’s report.
The Spartans’ offense produced ten hits in total. Deplitch went 2-for-3 with a home run and a double; Zermeno also finished 2-for-3 with a triple; McDowell had three RBIs; and Noriega added two more runs batted in. Starting pitcher Norah Coulsell earned her first career win by pitching all five innings without allowing an earned run.
Sophia Burdick had a perfect game at the plate, going 2-for-2 and scoring once.
In their second game of the day against No. 17 Stanford, San José State took an early lead but lost 16-4 in five innings. Burdick hit her first career inside-the-park home run and led the team with five total bases. Samantha Blachly drove in a run with two outs during the opening inning.
Stanford responded quickly to erase San José State’s lead, scoring four runs in their half of the first inning and seven more in the second to secure control of the game.
Defensively, Arden Walsh and McDowell combined for four putouts and four assists.
San José State will conclude its participation in the Stanford Invitational on Sunday morning against Cal as they seek another win over their conference opponent.
