San José State University’s women’s basketball team will host Fresno State on Wednesday, February 4, at the Provident Credit Union Event Center in San Jose. The game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. PT and will be broadcast on the Mountain West Network with Daniel Barrera providing play-by-play commentary.
This matchup marks the second meeting between the two teams this season. In their previous encounter on January 7 in Fresno, Fresno State defeated San José State 67-52. During that game, Carla Fuster and Allie Cummins each scored 11 points for San José State. The Spartans made 24 of their 32 free throw attempts and outscored the Bulldogs 29-21 in the second half.
San José State enters the contest with a record of 3-19 overall and a conference record of 1-10 in the Mountain West. The team is seeking to extend its home winning streak after defeating Nevada 60-57 on January 21 but has since lost two consecutive games against San Diego State and Boise State.
Fresno State holds a record of 10-13 overall and is eighth in the Mountain West standings with a conference mark of 4-8. The Bulldogs are coming off a loss to Air Force, where they were defeated 61-56 last Saturday. Ryan McCarthy is serving his first season as head coach for Fresno State after previously coaching at Alaska Anchorage for thirteen seasons.
The historical series between these teams dates back to the 1974–75 season, with Fresno State leading by a significant margin (68 wins to San José State’s 24). The Spartans’ most recent win over Fresno State occurred on February 25, 2023, when they won by a score of 73-66; Sabrina Ma led that game with twenty points.
Nationally, through February 3, San José State ranks within the top one hundred teams in five statistical categories: blocks per game (66th), defensive rebounds per game (96th), three-point attempts per game (20th), Maya Anderson’s field goal attempts (63rd), and Gabriela Pato’s total blocks (93rd).
Amira Brown recently recorded her second twenty-point performance of the season during San José State’s loss at Boise State. She scored twenty points while shooting efficiently from both field goals and three-point range as well as making all her free throws. Brown also had another twenty-two point outing earlier this year against Colorado State. Alongside Brown, Maya Anderson and Allie Cummins have each scored at least twenty points in individual games this season.
