San José State University’s women’s basketball team will play against the University of New Mexico at The Pit in Albuquerque on Wednesday night. This marks the first of two consecutive road games for the Spartans, who will also face Air Force later in the week.

The Spartans currently hold a 3-21 overall record and are 1-12 in Mountain West Conference play. In their most recent game, San José State lost to conference leader San Diego State by a score of 81-52. Maya Anderson led her team with 16 points, while Kaliyah Dillard achieved a career-high nine rebounds.

New Mexico enters Wednesday’s contest with a 16-8 overall record and an 8-5 mark in conference play. The Lobos are ranked fifth in the Mountain West standings and have won four out of their last five games. Mike Bradbury is serving his tenth year as head coach at New Mexico and his nineteenth year overall as a head coach.

The series between San José State and New Mexico dates back to the 1998-99 season, with New Mexico leading the all-time record 19 wins to four. Their last meeting took place on January 3, when New Mexico defeated San José State 89-51 in San Jose. In that game, Amira Brown scored 16 points for the Spartans, while Maya Anderson and Stella Sgro each added 11 points. The last time San José State won against New Mexico was on January 22, 2020.

Nationally, through February 9, San José State ranks within the top-100 teams in several statistical categories: they are ranked fifty-first for blocks per game (4.1), twenty-fourth for three-point attempts per game (26.1), fifty-fourth for Maya Anderson’s field goal attempts (334), and ninety-seventh for Gabriela Pato’s total blocks (30).

San José State has recorded notable defensive performances this season, including achieving nine blocked shots against Pepperdine on November 23—the highest by any Mountain West team this season and matching their own program best since January 2016. Gabriela Pato leads her team with thirty blocks this season.

On offense, multiple players have contributed double-digit scoring efforts throughout the year; at least three Spartans have reached double figures in nine different games.
