San José State University’s women’s tennis team secured a 4-3 win over Santa Clara University on Thursday at the Spartan Tennis Complex. The victory concludes the Spartans’ non-conference schedule, bringing their season record to 6-3.

The Spartans started by winning the doubles point for the first time since their match against Pacific on February 6. Camila Celis and Katarina Brajovic won their doubles match 6-0, while Duru Durgun and Emma Fantousis took theirs 6-1. These wins limited Santa Clara to just one point across both matches.

In singles play, Santa Clara responded with victories on courts two, four, and five, giving them a 3-1 lead. However, Cristina Mateos Losada won her match in straight sets (6-3, 6-3) on court six to keep San José State in contention. Duru Durgun also came from behind in her second set to win in straight sets (6-3, 6-4) on court one.

With the score tied at three apiece, Emma Fantousis clinched the overall win for San José State by prevailing in a three-set match (6-3, 4-6, 6-3). “Spartans WIN! #AllSpartans,” stated SJSU Women’s Tennis (@SanJoseStTennis) on social media following the match.

Other results included Soledad Fayos Capilla losing her singles match (6-1, 6-1), Camila Celis falling short on court five (6-3, 6-1), and Tara Mihaljevic being defeated (6-2, 6-2).

The Spartans now hold a home record of 3-1 this season and have extended their winning streak against Santa Clara to four consecutive matches.

San José State will begin conference play next Friday when they travel to Phoenix to face Grand Canyon University at the GCU Tennis Facility. The match is scheduled for March 13 at 11:00 a.m. PST.
