San José State University’s women’s tennis team achieved a 6-1 win over the University of the Pacific on Friday at the Eve Zimmerman Tennis Center in Stockton, California. The Spartans improved their season record to 3-0, while Pacific dropped to 0-5.
Duru Durgun led the Spartans by winning her singles match on court one in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3. In doubles play, Durgun and Emma Fantousis secured a victory with a score of 6-3. Another doubles pairing, Soledad Fayos Capilla and Cristina Mateos Losada, also won their match, finishing 6-4.
The Spartans clinched the overall win by taking five of six singles matches. On court three, Fantousis came back from a first-set loss to win her match 2-6, 6-2, 6-1. Tara Mihaljevic won on court four after dropping the first set but recovering for a 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 result.
Camila Celis earned a quick win on court five with scores of 6-4 and 6-3. Both Mihaljevic and Celis extended their undefeated records in dual singles play this season to three wins each. Mateos Losada added another point for San José State with a straight-set victory on court six, finishing at 6-2, 6-3.
Fayos Capilla was defeated in her singles match despite taking the first set; she lost by scores of 6-2, 5-7, and 2-6.
San José State will look to continue its strong start as the season progresses.
