The San José State women’s tennis team ended its 2026 season on April 22 after a close match against Utah State, falling 4-2 in the opening round of the Mountain West Tournament at the Darling Tennis Center in Las Vegas.

The result concludes a challenging year for the Spartans, who finished with an overall record of 8-14 and went 1-10 in conference play. The match saw strong performances from Emma Fantousis and Tara Mihaljevic, both winning their singles matches in straight sets. Fantousis dominated her opponent with a score of 6-0, 6-3, while Mihaljevic lost only one game en route to a convincing 6-0, 6-1 victory.

Utah State took early control by securing the doubles point. In flight two doubles, Camila Celis and Duru Durgun lost their set 3-6. The Aggies clinched the doubles point when Cristina Mateos Losada and Katarina Brajovic also fell by a score of 3-6 in flight three.

In singles play, despite strong efforts from San José State’s top performers, Utah State proved too strong at other positions. Mateos Losada was defeated in straight sets (1-6, 3-6) on court six. Celis fought back from losing her first set but ultimately dropped her match (3-6, 7-5, 3-6) on court five. The deciding match came on court three where Soledad Fayos Capilla won her first set before Maria Paula Ramos Garcia rallied for Utah State to win the next two sets (7-5, 1-6, 1-6), sealing victory for the Aggies.

Duru Durgun’s singles match was left unfinished as Utah State clinched the dual before it could be completed.

As this marks the end of their season run at Mountain West Tournament play for San José State women’s tennis team this year.
