Leata Sherlin hit her first career home run for the San José State softball team during a 5-1 loss to No. 22 Grand Canyon on March 20 at GCU Softball Stadium.

Sherlin’s performance stood out as she went 2-for-3 at the plate, delivering the Spartans’ only run with a homer over the right field fence after being down in the count. Despite her efforts, San José State was unable to generate more offense against Grand Canyon.

The game began with both teams scoreless in the first inning, but Grand Canyon took control by scoring three runs in the second inning and adding single runs in the third and fifth innings. Delaney Faus started for San José State, pitching 4.1 innings and striking out three batters before Jordyn Fray came in as relief, allowing just one hit and one walk while striking out one.

Gigi Ortega had a strong showing at the plate, going 2-for-2 with a walk for her first multihit game of her career. Ahmiya Noriega extended her on-base streak to seven games after drawing a walk. Reina Zermeno and Carly Cummings each recorded a hit; Zermeno is now on a five-game hitting streak while Cummings has reached base safely in six consecutive games. The Spartans played error-free defense throughout the matchup.

San José State will continue its series against No. 22 Grand Canyon tomorrow evening at GCU Softball Stadium.
