Sophie Patterson named Mountain West Freshman of the Year, four Spartans earn honors

San José State freshman gymnast Sophie Patterson was named Mountain West Freshman of the Year on March 20, with Patterson and four teammates earning All-Mountain West honors for the 2026 season.

The recognition highlights the achievements of San José State’s women’s gymnastics team during the current season. The awards reflect both individual and team successes as they prepare for upcoming championship competition.

Patterson received several distinctions, including First Team Beam, Second Team All-Around, and Second Team Vault. She competed as the team’s all-around gymnast with a National Qualifying Score (NQS) of 39.075 and achieved a vault NQS of 9.835. Patterson was honored four times as Mountain West Freshman of the Week and twice as Vault Specialist of the Week after winning vault titles at two meets. She ranked third in the conference on beam with a 9.850 NQS and earned MW Beam Specialist of the Week honors following her win at the Spartan Quad. In February, she scored a 9.925 on beam at Sacramento State, tying for the second-highest score in school history.

Other Spartans recognized include Kaviana Jurries (First Team Vault), who is second in Mountain West on vault with a 9.870 NQS and won six vault titles this season; Mikaela Pitts (First Team Vault), third in conference on vault with a 9.850 NQS and winner of four vault titles; Samantha Macasu (Second Team Bars), fourth in conference on bars with a 9.845 NQS; and Kaylee Larson (Second Team Floor), who led her team on floor with a 9.850 NQS and won her first floor title at the Spartan Quad.

The next event for San José State will be the 2026 Credit Union 1 Mountain West Championships, scheduled for Saturday, March 21 at ExtraMile Arena in Boise State University.
