SALINAS, CA – On May 9, U.S Representatives Zoe Lofgren (CA-18) and Jimmy Panetta (CA-19) announced that the Monterey County AmeriCorps will receive $920,000 in federal funding for literacy programs in the Alisal Union, Chualar Union, King City Union, and Monterey Peninsula Unified School Districts.

“All students deserve a high-quality education, and this funding will help make that possible. We will always fight for federal investments that boost community education efforts and help close achievement gaps,” said Reps. Lofgren and Panetta

The Monterey County Office of Education’s United for Literacy, AmeriCorps program provides reading tutors for K-4 students. Part of the national AmeriCorps community service program, the local program’s goal is to increase literacy rates and provide students with a path to meet their next grade-level requirements. In total, AmeriCorps programs across California will receive $69.2 million.

The funding comes from the FY23 consolidated appropriations package and the American Rescue Plan that Reps. Lofgren and Panetta voted in favor of.
