San José Park Rangers are urging visitors to adhere to safety guidelines following recent mountain lion sightings in the area. The Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Services Department will provide media interviews on Friday, June 7, from 1 - 2 p.m. at 1300 Senter Rd., San José, CA.
Mountain lions, also known as "pumas" or "cougars," are a protected species in California and play a significant role in the ecosystem. Much of Santa Clara County is considered prime habitat for these large predators.
To ensure safety during visits to San José’s parks and trails, rangers recommend the following precautions:
- Stay on marked trails and avoid hiking alone, especially at dusk or dawn.
- Never approach a mountain lion.
- Back away slowly to allow the lion to escape. Do not remain in the area or attempt to pass.
- Stand tall, face the animal, make noise, and try to appear larger by waving your arms or throwing objects.
- Do not turn your back or run away; this could trigger a chase response.
- Pick up small children without bending over.
- Fight back if attacked.
All mountain lion sightings and encounters should be reported immediately. If you see a mountain lion in the area, call 408-277-8900 or dial 9-1-1 if the animal shows signs of aggression such as growling or chasing.
