Rep. Zoe Lofgren, who has represented California’s 18th district in the U.S. Congress since 1995, posted a series of messages on social media addressing recent political developments and her hopes for the new year.
On January 1, 2026, Lofgren reflected on the challenges faced by Americans in the previous year. She wrote, “2025 was a tough year for a lot of people. This New Year, I hope we seize the opportunity to make life better for all Americans and fight for the future we deserve.”
Later that day, she criticized House Republicans over healthcare policy changes: “House Republicans have officially let ACA tax credits expire. Instead of lowering healthcare costs, they’ve chosen to send Americans’ healthcare premiums soaring. My Democratic colleagues and I will fight to restore these credits and stop the Republican healthcare crisis.” The Affordable Care Act (ACA) tax credits are designed to make health insurance more affordable for millions of Americans.
On January 2, Lofgren commented on congressional testimony from Special Counsel Jack Smith regarding former President Donald Trump: “I sat through Jack Smith’s testimony, and I’d urge everyone to watch these clips. Republicans tried to rewrite history and shield Trump from the consequences of his crimes, but Special Counsel Smith had the law on his side. No wonder they tried burying this on New Year’s Eve.”
Lofgren has served in Congress since replacing Don Edwards in 1995 and previously held office as a member of the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors from 1981 to 1994. Born in San Mateo in 1947 and currently residing in San Jose, she holds degrees from Stanford University (BA) and Santa Clara University (JD).
