The City of San José has announced the opening of cooling centers with extended hours from Wednesday, June 5 to Thursday, June 6, 2024. This measure follows a Heat Advisory issued by the National Weather Service that includes San José.
Three locations will be available for residents seeking relief from high temperatures:
- Dylan Kuhlmann-Haley, Public Information Representative, Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Services Department
408-460-4468; Dylan.Kuhlmann@sanjoseca.gov
- 3369 Union Ave., San José, 95124
- Emma Prusch Farm Park
647 S. King Rd., San José, 95116
- Roosevelt Community Center (Pet-Friendly 1-9 p.m.)
901 E. Santa Clara St., San José, 95116
These centers will provide bottled water, free Wi-Fi, and outlets for charging devices. To maintain space and access for all visitors, large belongings such as bicycles should remain outside.
Roosevelt Community Center is designated as pet-friendly during active heat advisories and allows dogs and cats to stay with their owners from 1 to 9 p.m. Pet owners must adhere to specific guidelines: dogs must be leashed at all times and cats must be in crates or harnesses if trained. Unrestrained pets are not permitted. Pets displaying aggression or disruptive behavior will be required to leave.
Owners are responsible for their pets' needs including food, water, and other supplies. Designated pet relief areas will be available and owners must assist with clean-up in case of accidents.
In addition to these cooling centers, community centers and libraries across San José are open during regular business hours for residents needing a cool place to stay. A list of community centers can be found at bit.ly/sjcommunitycenters and library locations at www.sjpl.org/locations.
