The City's largest park returns to the heart of San José for the day

SAN JOSE, Calif. (June 6, 2024) – The City of San José’s Parks Recreation and Neighborhood Services (PRNS) Department is set to host the second Viva CalleSJ (VCSJ) event of 2024. This free event closes miles of streets to encourage residents to walk, bike, skate, play, and explore downtown San José.

“Viva Calle is a wonderful reflection of our diverse city and the hard work of multiple City departments who work as One Team to make it all possible. This event really exemplifies and helps us reach the Neighborhood Services City Service Area of Welcoming and Vibrant Neighborhoods and Public Life,” said City Manager Jennifer Maguire.

The upcoming VCSJ event will take place on June 9 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., featuring a route that extends from downtown to east San José, reaching Lake Cunningham Park where California’s largest skatepark spans 68,000 square feet.

“Viva Calle is a beloved opportunity for neighbors from across our city to come together, build relationships, and enjoy all that San José has to offer,” said Mayor Matt Mahan. “And if our budget passes next week, we’ll have another chance to get out of our homes and come together in community thanks to higher than projected revenue allowing us to add another Viva Calle and 25 Viva Parks events to the calendar.”

Closing streets to motorized vehicles enables residents to explore local businesses and connect with their neighbors. Participants can join at any point along the route which features live music, food trucks, and entertainment.

“By supporting City events like Viva CalleSJ, we not only promote our business but also contribute to the vibrancy and spirit of our beloved City,” said Jesus Flores, Executive Director of Latino Business Foundation Silicon Valley.

The route includes three activity hubs offering hydration stations, restrooms, first aid services, and free bike repairs:

- The Alum Rock Village hub will host four wrestling shows by Pro Wrestling Revolution.

- The Lake Cunningham Action Sports Park hub will feature BMX shows by the BMX Freestyle Team.

- Over 30 local vendors will be present at the City Hall hub where people can connect through food, art, and music.

Viva CalleSJ aligns with the City’s ActivateSJ guiding principle by providing free events for residents to connect with their community.
