The City of San José has announced the launch of a Civics Master Class aimed at enhancing civic participation and fostering inclusivity within the city's immigrant population. Developed in collaboration with the local nonprofit organization Only in San José, this initiative provides residents with the opportunity to gain skills in civic participation and community engagement.

Mayor Matt Mahan emphasized the importance of bringing everyone into the conversation, stating, "The greatest thing about our democracy is that it reflects the will of the people." He added, "This new Civics Master Class will make it easier for our diverse community to get engaged and tell us how we can better represent them."

City Manager Jennifer Maguire highlighted the program's focus on closing racial inequities, stating, "The program offers a comprehensive guide to understanding how local government operates. Participants will gain the skills and confidence necessary to engage and participate in public meetings, policy-making, and joining boards and commissions in the City of San José."

The online class will be offered in English, Spanish, and Vietnamese, with translations provided by local community members. Ellina Yin, Founder of Only in San José, expressed the organization's mission to empower residents, stating, "Our mission is to strategically EDUCATE, ENABLE, and EMPOWER residents with the knowledge, skills, and resources to create the change they wish to see in their community."

Zulma Maciel, Director of the Office of Racial Equity, emphasized the importance of civic and community participation, stating, "We believe that when we have greater civic and community participation, there’s a sense of agency and belonging." She added, "The Civics Master Class is a testament to our commitment to building a multiracial democracy that works for everyone."

The City of San José, with almost one million residents, is known for its diversity and commitment to equity and inclusion. The Office of Racial Equity within the city is dedicated to embedding a racial equity practice and creating a more just and equitable society for all residents.

Only in San José, a local nonprofit organization, is committed to empowering residents to become active participants in shaping the future of their community through education, advocacy, and collaboration.

The Civics Master Class aims to instill a sense of belonging, empowerment, and ownership among all residents, providing them with the knowledge and skills to actively engage in civic affairs and create positive change in their community.
